Don't risk 2nd rate safety
CFMEU ACT Branch is again targeting safety in the construction industry, after two serious incidents and a death of a worker in four weeks since late December 2011 .
The union will be clamping down on construction contractors to ensure they prioritise safety.
CFMEU ACT is also calling on WorkSafe and the Government to get behind the Union and ensure all builders are meeting their safety obligations.
We need WorkSafe and the Government to say ‘enough is enough’.
"If you have a serious injury in your workplace you should report it, so we can go out and investigate it, and try and to prevent it happening again in the future," says CFMEU ACT Secretary Dean Hall.
The ACTU has also launched a new Campaign: Speak Up for Safety to coincide with the introduction of the ‘harmonised’ national OHS laws from January 1, 2012 . The campaign includes the launch of a new website: www.safeatwork.org.au which is a hub of information for workers and OHS reps about common health and safety issues, rights and obligations, tips for safer workplaces, legislation and news.
Facts
- Every 2-3 minutes someone in Australia is injured seriously enough to lodge a worker’s compensation claim.
- There are almost 690,000 work-related incidents - including diseases, injuries and fatalities - each year. In 2007-08, there were 150 notified work-related fatalities. - The Australian Safety and Compensation Council stated in its March 2009 report that: "Studies estimate that as many as 7000 fatalities may occur each year as a result of work-related disease." This is four times the annual national road toll.
- The total economic cost of work-related injuries and illnesses for the 2005-06 financial year was $57.6 billion which was 5.9% of GDP.
- Construction is one of Australia's top three most dangerous injuries.
