CFMEU ACT targets safety: ‘enough is enough’!
CFMEU ACT Branch is again targeting safety in the construction industry, after two serious incidents and a death of a worker in the past four weeks.
“Civil contractors seem to have dropped the ball when it comes to safety,” said Dean Hall, CFMEU ACT Secretary. “And half the safety incidents occurring across the construction industry are not being reported properly.”
The Union is concerned that civil contractors have a lax attitude to safety.
“They don't seem to pay the same attention to safety as other sectors. They seem to think they don't have the risks but unfortunately the reality is they have significant risks in their sector and they need to stop taking shortcuts. They need to start thinking that they need to protect their workers and the families of these workers," Mr Hall said.
In December, Wayne Vickery, 45, died after being struck by a grader on a construction site in Canberra's north. A few days later, a roller overturned near the Cotter Dam, leaving the driver with spinal injuries. Last week, a 76-year-old worker received leg and hip injuries after trying to stop a rolling truck that was left in neutral on a slope, at a Bonner development in Gungahlin.
Mr Hall said the union will be clamping down on construction contractors this year to ensure they prioritise safety.
CFMEU ACT is also calling on WorkSafe and the Government to get behind the Union and ensure all builders are meeting their safety obligations.
"We need WorkSafe and the Government to get behind us and say enough is enough. If you have a serious injury in your workplace you must report it, so we can go out and investigate it, and try and to prevent it happening again in the future," Mr Hall said.
