Canadian workers protest corporate greed - Sat Jan 21
A huge day of action will be held in London, Ontario tomorrow, January 21, to rally against corporate greed and the Canadian Government for allowing the US multinational Caterpillar to lock out workers who voted against a contract that would reduce pay by 50%, cut benefits, pensions, vacation time, elimination of retiree benefits, reduction in shift premiums, major reduction in dental.
"Caterpillar is a very profitable US company making $42.6 billion dollars a year," reports Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), the locomotive workers union.
Caterpillar came to London, Ontario as part of a Government incentive program which offers tax breaks of $5 million to companies to come to Canada to increase jobs.
“Caterpillar employees increased production by 20% last year,” CAW says. “These are very skilled workers.
But with unemployment running at 10% currently, “Employers are starting to use the high unemployment rate to their advantage. All companies are watching what Caterpillar is doing to see if they can get away with this.”
