Court case collapse reveals ABCC officers conspired to set up CFMEU official
Conspiracy by Government body must be investigated, says National Secretary
CFMEU Construction National Secretary, Dave Noonan, today called on the Federal Government to launch an investigation into the operation of the Australian Building and Construction Commission in light of the spectacular collapse of multiple charges brought by the ABCC against two CFMEU officials in the Victorian Magistrates Court today.
ABCC investigators admitted to having lost or destroyed evidence including audio recordings, and changed their own statements to the court.
The ABCC were also accused in Court of having targeted their case against one of the officials without any evidence because of political bias.
Mr Noonan said today that the evidence over the previous days had shown the ABCC was targeting union officials, prepared to destroy evidence and waste taxpayers' money to try to destroy the personal reputations of individuals.
“Even by the standards of the ABCC this case was vindictive, politically motivated and showed the ends to which this organization will go to target union officials,” Mr Noonan said.
“The fact that these people have access to extraordinary powers is a disgrace. The investigators of the ABCC were prepared to doctor evidence, destroy evidence and conspire – and yet they operate under laws that give them incredible power over people’s lives,” Mr Noonan said.
“The conduct of this case needs an external and independent review.
“This is further evidence that the ABCC must be scrapped.”
